According to a recent survey conducted by the Tongcheng Research Institute, it has been found that a significant number of Chinese respondents have plans for outbound travel in 2024. Out of those surveyed, 63.9% expressed their intention to travel abroad, with over 40% planning to complete more than two trips during the year.
However, it seems that Chinese travelers will be staying close to home during the upcoming Chinese New Year, as only 13.5% of respondents mentioned planning outbound travel during this period. Instead, many are considering traveling abroad during the summer vacation (21.6%) or China’s National Day Golden Week in October (13.7%). Interestingly, close to half of the respondents (46.8%) stated that they would avoid traveling during public holiday periods.
The survey results indicate a strong desire among Chinese travelers to explore international destinations in 2024. This could have a significant impact on the tourism industry, particularly in countries that are popular among Chinese tourists. As such, destinations should prepare to accommodate the influx of Chinese travelers and cater to their specific preferences and needs.
The findings of the survey are consistent with the projections made by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) for 2024. STB expects a continued strong recovery in tourism, with both international visitor arrivals and tourism receipts showing year-over-year growth. The board estimates that international visitor arrivals in 2024 will range from 15 million to 16 million, contributing approximately S$26 billion to S$27.5 billion in tourism receipts.
Moreover, the South Australian Tourism Commission has reported record visitor expenditure in the region, reaching A$10.2 billion in the year ending September 2023. This milestone indicates the strong recovery of international expenditures, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
