The travel and tourism industry in India has experienced a remarkable rebound, with an annual growth rate of 25 percent in 2023, according to data by foundit. This growth has not only brought economic benefits but has also resulted in an increase in job opportunities.
In 2021-22, the total number of direct and indirect jobs in the tourism sector slightly increased to 70 million, as reported by Union Minister for Culture, Tourism and DoNER G Kishan Reddy in Rajya Sabha on February 8. This is an encouraging sign considering that the sector had experienced a decline in employment in the previous year.
The Indian government recognizes the importance of sustainable development in the tourism sector. The development strategy for Lakshadweep Islands focuses on achieving sustainable growth while preserving the unique cultural and environmental characteristics of the region. The aim is to position Lakshadweep as a model for responsible and inclusive development.
To boost tourism in the region, the government plans to leverage the natural beauty of Lakshadweep and create a robust and resilient economy. This strategy aims to enhance the quality of life for the islanders and foster a sense of pride and well-being among the local communities.
The Ministry of Tourism has also introduced the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD 2.0) scheme to develop sustainable and responsible tourism destinations. Under this scheme, 57 destinations in India, including Lakshadweep, have been identified for development. This initiative focuses on promoting tourism while ensuring environmental conservation.
In addition to the overall growth in the industry, there has been a significant increase in white-collar job opportunities. The number of white-collar jobs in the travel and tourism sector has witnessed an 18 percent increase in hiring activity, from 10,276 in January 2023 to 12,141 in January 2024. Sales and business development positions hold the largest share of job roles, followed by chefs and travel consultants.
This growth in job opportunities indicates a positive trend in the travel and tourism sector, highlighting its potential for further expansion in the coming years. The industry’s resilience and adaptability are evident as it continues to contribute significantly to the Indian economy.
