Thai Government Launches Assistance Scheme to Support Foreign Tourists Affected by Incidents

The Thai government has recently announced the implementation of a new program, the Assistance Scheme for Foreign Tourist Injury and Casualty, aimed at providing financial support to foreign tourists who encounter accidents or suffer losses during their visit to Thailand. This scheme, which will be in effect from January 1 to August 31, 2024, seeks to alleviate the burden faced by tourists affected by unforeseen circumstances.

Under this scheme, eligible tourists will be able to receive compensation for incidents that are not a result of their own negligence. This includes offenses against the body and life, accidents, bodily harm, theft, rape, and situations that endanger public safety. The compensation package encompasses a variety of areas, such as coverage for death or dismemberment, permanent disability, loss of eyesight, total disability preventing occupational duties, and medical and domestic transportation expenses within Thailand.

To ensure that tourists receive the necessary support in a timely manner, the government has set a deadline for submitting claims. It is vital for affected individuals to submit their claims within 15 days of the incident to be considered for compensation.

Tourists who already have an existing insurance policy in place can also benefit from this scheme. They can request compensation for the difference between their insurance coverage and the specified limits outlined by the Assistance Scheme.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will be responsible for reviewing and finalizing compensation decisions. Applications can be submitted either online or by post. It is important to note that the deadline for compensation claims, specifically related to incidents occurring from January 1, 2024, is September 15, 2024.

This initiative by the Thai government not only demonstrates their commitment to ensuring the well-being of foreign tourists but also serves as a testament to their dedication to the tourism industry. By providing financial assistance to those affected by unfortunate incidents, Thailand aims to maintain its reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for travelers from all around the world.
