Red Deer County has Approved Funding for Tourism and Sport Organizations

Red Deer County council has recently announced its decision to allocate $100,000 to Red Deer Tourism over the next two years, demonstrating its commitment to promoting tourism in the region. This funding is in addition to the $50,000 provided to the tourism organization last year, along with an annual operations fee of $60,000.

The funds will be used strategically to invest in major and regional events selected by an event advisory committee and the leadership of Tourism Red Deer. The objective of this investment is to drive the visitor economy and benefit all stakeholders involved in hosting these events. By funding these key events, Red Deer County aims to create a boost in the local economy and generate significant economic spinoffs.

Last year, Red Deer Tourism successfully organized several major events, including the Red Deer Regional Airshow, the Senior AAA Men’s Baseball tournament, the International Times Powwow, the 2023 WHL Cup, the Canadian Finals Rodeo, and the Agri-Trade Equipment Expo. These events alone generated over $32 million in direct economic impact, and an additional $50 million in indirect economic spinoffs.

Looking ahead to 2024, Red Deer Tourism has outlined an ambitious plan that includes implementing a regional marketing strategy, releasing an updated version of the Visitor Guide, launching a direct-to-visitor email marketing campaign, and expanding its presence on social media platforms. These measures aim to attract even more visitors to the region and increase the organization’s membership base.

Furthermore, Red Deer County council has also agreed to provide $50,000 in funding over the next two years to the Central Alberta Sport Authority, also known as Central Sport. This organization was established following the 2019 Canada Winter Games with the aim of positioning central Alberta as a sports leader. Central Sport plays a crucial role in assisting local sports organizations in attracting revenue-generating events and offering volunteer training programs.

With the recent hiring of a CEO, executive assistant, and the recruitment of over 360 volunteers, Central Sport is well-equipped to support and facilitate various sporting events in the region.

By investing in tourism and sport organizations, Red Deer County demonstrates its commitment to fostering economic growth, attracting visitors, and establishing itself as a prominent destination for sports and tourism in Alberta.
